Coventry Choir Visit to Radio Show

A Special Morning Visit

In 1994, I was hosting a morning radio broadcast that reached 27 counties as well as in the choir at Christ Church in Macon. It made a habit of bringing touring choirs there to enrich the lives and music palette of the parishioners. Coventry Cathedral Choir, as was the Norwich Choir, was one of these. I remember it was in October as it was Fair Week. This means the Georgia State Fair was in town. It's about as southern and down home as you could get.

Into the downtown church parking lot the bus pulls. Tired (and bored) choristers and adults exited. It was mentioned that it might be nice to see some things in Macon that they could remember. I suggested a trip to the fair, knowing that young and teenage kids would have little or no interest in historical buildings. So, we all pilled back onto the bus where we went blocks away to another universe. The kids saw the rides, the games and the food and were ecstatic. Now we're in business!

They returned sunburned and excited. The rehearsal went great. That night during the concert, I noticed one of the choristers had a blue hippo, that he had won at the fair, on the music rest.

The next morning I couldn't believe it when the bus pulled up to the studio and the choir came by to visit and to entertain my listening audience with a choral version of "Down By the Riverside." The radio audience went wild. What a beautiful and wonderful gift.
